Very funny movie. Kerri Russell was great. The pies she invented were hilarious. Nathan was really good. If only the soundtrack included a certain song from the Dixie Chicks, that would've topped things off nicely. Not that I'm a fan of the Dixie Chicks or anything

I saw Little Children. (It just came to Berlin.) It was a little unsettling, a little too willing to take itself seriously.

Much like Todd Field's In the Bedroom, it hits the wrong notes at times when it most desperately needs to hit the right ones. Tonally, it feels like an odd hybrid of In the Bedroom and American Beauty.

There's a black humor in the words and scenarios that Field just isn't quite capable of communicating. He gets the joke and knows the punch line, but he falters whenever he tries to to tell it/them. He seems forever in Douglas Sirk mode, either unwilling or incapable of allowing humor to pierce the melodrama when it should be allowed to do so.

Winslet deserves the attention she got for her performance, and I think Wilson probably deserves more attention than he got for his performance.

It was better than I expected...but still not "good". Whatever.

I also watched Summer of Sam.

I'm not on a good roll with movies.

Every Thursday night is SuperSneak MysteryMovie night at the Sony Center Megaplex. You never know what you are going to get until the credits begin to flash (or, in Zodiac's case, when the vintage studio logos appear on screen).

Last Thursday, it was Invincible (and, no, not the identically titled, halfway decent Herzog movie from six years back). Let's hope it's something more palatable this Thursday.

I watched "Gridiron Gang" starring The Rock and Xzibit. Despite the obvious jokes that would arise, the move is actually pretty good, especially when they show footage of the actual juvenile facility and the charactor portrayed by the Rock over the credits, and you realize how much of what is said is verbatim.

You know, when I first heard The Rock was gonna start doing movies, I wanted to hurt someone and burn every copy of every movie he ever starred in. Having seen a few now, the guy's actually gotten pretty decent and I can't really complain. Sure, he needs to learn to give soliliqueys better (his speech from Walking Tall still makes me roll my eyes) but his craft is obviously improving with each outing.

The kid who plays Micah as Billy Batson? He's a little too young, though for all I know he's probably one or two years away from a huge growth spurt a la the kid who plays Walt in Lost, which would make for an interesting -- and hilarious -- dilemma for the writers come next season or the season after that.

It's too bad Gomer Pyle is dead since he'd be the obvious choice. No one can say "Shazam!" as well as him.

Yeah. Isn't Grey-Cabey less than that? Even if he isn't, he doesn't strike me as a Billy Batson, though to be honest, I've never thought about the issue of someone playing a "real-life" Billy Batson to the extent that I could say "he strikes me as a Billy Batson." So this is perhaps the first time I've found occasion to make such a statement.

Maybe they could get Orlando Bloom to play Batson. How fucking hilarious would it be to see Bloom turn into The Rock? What, you don't know how fucking hilarious it would be? Well, then, let me tell you. It would be pretty fucking hilarious.

The boy from Magnolia (Jeremy Blackman) might have made a great Billy Batson, but he'd be too old, now. And I don't think The Rock would make a convincing "older" version of him.
