I watched Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and Lady Vengeance this past weekend.

I have also started The Wire on DVD.

Quite a bit of angst in my recent viewings.

Falling For Grace - Writer/Actor/Producer/Director/Distributor Fay Ann Lee was on hand for a Q&A session after the movie, in Des Moines, IA no less!

Lucky Number Slevin - The early dialogue was a bit too clever for its own good, but other than that, I quite liked it.

I'm going for my 3rd viewing of The Dark Knight tonight with some friends that haven't seen it yet. They have no idea what they are in for!

Its going to be fun as these are the 2 guys that I used to go to all the midnight and opening night screenings years ago.

The magic pencil trick still gets me! Probably the best introduction of a villian since Vader. And no, I don't count the bank scene as an intro to the Joker.

Debating whether I'm going to try to see it for a fourth time in the theater. I think the last movie I saw that many times in the theater may have been Phantom Menace.

If I were to go see it again, it would only be for the Joker. I would show up late (wouldn't worry about missing the bank scene), and I would leave the second the movie leaves him behind.

I've come to realize I don't really enjoy the rest of the movie all that much.

Watched No Country for Old Men Friday night on DVD. Wasn't as good as I expected. The performances were rock-solid, but I didn't much care for the story, or the resolutions for any of the characters. Plus the ending left me with more questions than I like from movies that aren't #2 in a planned trilogy.

I know you're going to feel some kind of weird compulsion to watch it. Like most of us. I strongly recommend, however, that you don't.

At one point, Jabba says "No badda bargain, no badda freepass-o."

The movie seriously needs Ben Burtt. The sound folks were content to have R2 use the same beep sequence over and over.

I did eventually get used to the animation, but I never "liked" it. A lot of feet were sliding around on floors. It looked kind of like those Scooby-Doo cartoons where the gang was walking or running faster or slower than the background was moving.

There's no fart, but there is a green, gaseous burp.

For some reason, they have Jabba's "uncle" sound like a cross between Truman Capote and Carol Channing. And "he" speaks English.

I do not want to get into specifics--it would be too draining, frankly--but I'm not sure this is going to work well on the small screen. It's too imbecilic for adults and too dull for kids.

I do hope the show moves away from constant, hyper reference to the other movies' dialog(s) and shot compositions. It was annoying enough in the prequels, but to see so much of it crammed into ninety minutes . . .

No. This isn't homage. This isn't weighty, thoughtful circular/recursive storytelling making good use of leitmotifs. This shit is cut and paste. This is squarely in line with the Modern Humorist's "Just bring me the script to the first movie (in the movie in question's case, it would be Episodes I-VI) and a fucking Sharpie."

I went in hoping they had just done an awful job marketing it. It's Star Wars, and it being Star Wars, I wanted to like it.

Again, it's way too dull for kids. At least Tartakovsky's shorts--silly as they were--were somewhat entertaining. They benefitted from being two minutes at their shortest and twelve at their longest, though. This movie takes one hundred minutes to tell a story that could have been told in two or three episodes of Tartakovsky's first season (the one comprised entirely of two-to-three minute episodes) of The Clone Wars.

But I don't want to talk about it.

Honestly, you're better off not seeing it. I'm a completist. I had no choice in the matter. You folks do. Save yourselves. Save yourselves!

Shoot, I dunno. Don't let me tell you what to do. Go see the damned thing. Maybe you'll like it. One of the five other guys in the audience clapped loudly at the end, gave the movie an enthusiastic "Woooo!"

Maybe he really liked it.

Maybe he was just glad it was over.

Seriously, though. Don't listen to me. Be your own judge. Spend your own eight bucks, then come back here and tell us what you thought of it.

The Clone Wars on Sunday.

I liked it. My wife liked it for the most part, (she pretty much hates all things Star Wars), and the audience seemed to like it, (though it was a much smaller audience than I had expected for an opening weekend).

Something about Coogan trying on an American accent and a brand of humor that isn't quite his specialty (he usually does arrogant-but-clueless, here he's almost getting into Jim Carrey territory) was disorienting.

Still, though, it was pretty funny.
