For MLA Style, common wisdom is that the question mark is supposed to follow the quotation mark if the quotation, itself, is not a question.

This site has it right:

A question mark precedes the quotation mark if it is part of the quotation and follows the quotation mark if it is not part of the quotation.

This is only for MLA Style. Chicago Stylings are different, as are ALA and British standards. I am less familiar with them, and thus less willing to use them as any kind of standard.

Putting the question mark inside the closing quote in MLA-formatted documents is a common case of hyper correction.

MLA formatting is non-denominational, naturally. It just happened that the site to which I linked (the first hit when I did my Google search) was a "Christian" college site.

I did a little sniffing around various websites. It turns out that Chicago Style and MLA Style are in agreement on the issue of where question marks are supposed to go.

If I weren't stuck on the work site, I could peer directly into the horses' mouths and give you the appropriate page numbers. It angers me that neither MLA formatting nor Chicago Style guidelines are offered for free by the organizations, themselves. They're all money grubbing bastards!

I make grammar, citation and spelling mistakes on a daily basis. (In the previous sentence, Strunk & White would have me believe that a comma should follow citation. The MLA folks would have me believe the same thing. The Germans wouldn't do it, though, and I am in league with them in this regard. I am also a vicious racist and totalitarian, so I suppose I am in a number of their leagues.) Writing within the guidelines of MLA formatting is what I do for a living, though, so I feel I have a decent handle on it.

I follow the British usage of punctuation and quotation marks. It makes more logical sense.

But it was a lesser-known actor who, a few years after Burton's film, made perhaps the most distinct imprint on Batman's voice. Kevin Conroy, as the voice of the animated Batman in various projects from 1992's "Batman: The Animated Series" right up until this year's "Batman: Gotham Knight," brought a darker, raspier vocalization to Batman.

Conroy has inhabit the role longer than anyone else and though animated voice-over work doesn't have the same cachet as feature film acting, there are quarters where Conroy is viewed as the best Batman of them all — certainly superior to Val Kilmer or George Clooney.

Okay. This article gets HUGE credit for giving a voice actor the respect he deserves, in general, and for recognizing Conroy's Batman, specifically.

BUT, I would not describe Conroy's Batman as "raspier." If Bale was trying to emulate Conroy, then he missed the mark by a long shot. Conroy's voice is darker and lower when he's Batman, but there's no rasp to it whatsoever. I think Bale needs to spend a lot of time with Conroy for the third film.

Or, can we just get Conroy to dub the whole thing?

If he's worried about someone identifying him by his voice, he should just do a Brando impersonation.

So, after 4 weeks of release TDK is at $451,888,386 as of Wednesday.

Its reigned supreme the first 4 weeks, does anyone think it can do it again? I doubt it will be #1 this week, but I could be wrong.
