How the heck are they supposed to bridge the gap from Nemesis to the new movie???!??!?!?!!???? The former takes place LONG after the later, unless this is their way of telling us that this is really going to be a big ol' time-travel movie that will totally F up the Star Trek continuity. Maybe that's how "old Spock" is in it??

I would love a Star Trek movie with no time-travel and doesn't take place mostly off of the ship. Consequently I'm going to watch WoK, the only one that mostly fits that scenario.

Even though I ranted about the choice of actors, over the summer, for this movie, I don't have a problem with the actors themselves, yet. Takei has given Cho his seal of approval (did I post that?) so that helps.

Here are some thoughts on all of this... it's been on my mind, lately:

I'm worried. I'm worried that the same thing is going to happen to this movie that happened to Transformers. Kurtzman and Orci have said a lot of nice things but, ultimately, I'm worried they're going to give us something that has no soul.

They've already fundamentally altered the TNG end of the universe with the tie-in comic. The fact that a tie-in comic links this movie to TNG negates the whole idea of a reboot. I'm okay with the idea of a reboot, but this isn't even that. It's an alternate universe. The comic also sets up a very hollow, empty motivation for the villain.

From what I've seen of the film from trailers, and what I've read, it seems like too much focus is put on the action and the explosions and the ships and not enough on the emotion or the challenges to one's way of thinking or interaction between the characters (despite the lip-service). Star Trek isn't any of these things exclusively; it's a combination of all of them. It just seems like those involved in this film don't get that. They want to give us dessert, but we need the meat and potatoes, too.

As if it were a friend who'd passed away, I said goodbye to Star Trek ten years ago when Deep Space Nine ended. I still think back fondly and reminisce about the good times, but now Abrams, Kurtzman, Orci and everyone else involved want to dig up my friend, put a different shirt on him and make him fight a Romulan.

They think it's okay to do that. They think that a reboot-that's-not-a-reboot, hollow motivations and more explosions than we probably need are okay for Star Trek.

I think they should just let my friend rest in peace.

Eventually, you will realize you hate them for ruining your two favorite franchises. You will then hunt them down, tie them down, and slap their naked chests with frozen carp until they promise you never to touch ThunderCats.

The reviews so far have been universally positive and many of the comments I've read say that the plot is "smart" and that the story is very character-driven. Abrams is a creatively red-hot director, and despite what some people think of Orci and Kurtzman, they are adept storytellers who are very knowledgeable about flagship geek properties like Trek. I'm greatly looking forward to seeing it this weekend.

I hope you're right, pal. I really do. But, they let me down with Transformers (I know you disagree on that)... and I keep hearing the same lip service from Krutz and Orca that they gave us for Transformers.

I'm nervous, but I'm going to see it anyway.

So far I've heard nothing but good stuff about this, and from the previews it looks pretty darn cool. But I've never claimed to be a "Trekker", so as long as its not completely stupid with its flaunting of continuity, I'll probably really like it.

But I also liked Transformers.

Maybe I've just become bitter and cynical in my old age.
