I know we've discussed the potential remake already, but now it offically has a director.

Release date set for 2010.
Directed by Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream)
Written by David Self (Road to Perdition, 13 Days)

That’s easily one of the most… interesting… director/feature pairings I’ve seen in recent memory.

I fully expect Aronofsky to make something so cerebral he’ll simultaneously destroy the franchise (which was already destroyed, anyway) and raise it to the level of cinematic art. I’ve seen most of his films and I still can’t decide if I like him or hate him. But I know he’s good. Real good. He’s one of “those” directors.

What ever happened to his Batman project?

Was that what eventually was turned into Batman Begins? I seem to remember it being something different though.

Anyway, the Ainitcool article on the new Robocop seems to indicate it's another venture into the universe (something like 100 years in the future from the previous films) and not a remake proper.

His was supposed to be the alternate history from Batman: Year One where Bruce grows up on the tough side of town and eventually discovers he is the sole heir to a massive fortune who was kidnapped as a baby or something. Allegedly, elements of Aronofsky's script (or at least certain ideas) made it into Batman Begins which is really not a big-screen translation of any one Batman comic series but contains elements of YO as well as The Dark Knight Returns and others while certain elements are strictly from the mind of Chris Nolan (such as Rachel Dawes and how she complicates Bruce's life as Batman since she works for the DA and is a lifelong friend, etc.).

P.S. Aronofsky had already cast Batman before being bounced from the project. His choice? Christian Bale.
