Dark Horizons is reporting that some periodical of dubious reputation is itself reporting that James McAvoy is the number one choice for Bilbo Baggins. I immediately liked the idea, though I hated him in The Last King of Scotland. I enjoyed him much more in Atonement, and I just don't particular care for the look of Wanted in any particular area. Atonement is what I'm going off of, though.

He's been over saturated lately, but he'll do.

I take severe issue to this though, as I think Ian Holm should still play Bilbo, and he is perfect for the role.

As Bilbo did not age since the finding of the One Ring, he would look identical between the Hobbit and Fellowship. Stupid to change actors, IMO

Bilbo aged slowly, but he certainly didn't stop aging, and it's also been a few years. Ian Holm was of course already a bit old to play a youngish Bilbo (I think they said they pulled his face back for the one shot we got of him in Gollum's cave). I've always thought they'd have to recast the part. I really don't see how they could have a, what, 70-year-old? play Bilbo if they were going for the character as he was in the book.

The rumors I had heard suggested that, if it were decided that Ian Holm had gotten too old to play a younger Bilbo, Martin Freeman was the front runner to take his place.

Agree on Holm, but I disagree on the character.

Still, the book and movie made it clean that he did not look eleventy-one.

PS - I really don't mind other than the character itself. I thought Holm set a great standard to follow, and I hope they don't mess with it too much. Bilbo is very much an anit-hero.

Ha, I thought you might pull out that line! People often do not realize how a person has aged until they see a photograph of what they used to look like. We saw Bilbo in Gollum's cave, and they taped back his face to smooth it out a little, and his hair was darker, so he had clearly aged more than a day! But yeah, I think Holm's just a bit old at this point to play lead in an adventure movie.
