He battled cancer for quite some time, and it contributed to his irregularity as an often-incapable-of-making-a-deadline artist (one of the reasons he concentrated on covers these last few years).
I was never really a fan of his artwork. His men were too sketchy and his men's faces' features were set too small in their squarish heads (all atop a Jim Lee body). The women, by contrast, were all big lipped, giant-eyed (all atop a J. Scott Campbell body) and even more buxom than is the norm for comics. And it always bothered me that he seemed terrified of drawing backgrounds.
Despite my not caring for his work, his diligence in the face of failing health is an inspiration, and as I said elsewhere, bone cancer is a nasty bitch. That people have to suffer through such things is almost unfathomable to me.
(My use of a form of "fathom" was completely accidental. I just noticed it as my arrow was hovering over "Submit.")
