After the phenomenal third-season finale, the Lost fan community is in a state of heightened excitement, bewilderment, and eagerness, and viewers who left the show early in the season are coming back to see what all the commotion is about. It's safe to say that the cast and crew not only straightened things out with the last few episodes of Season 3, they kicked things into a whole new gear and served notice to other shows that they still have a lot to teach them. The next three seasons are looking better and better.

So where the hell do they go from here? Does everybody have to get back to the island? Will the producers/writers take this opportunity to dump some characters or maybe add new ones?

I really have no idea what they plan on doing.

Oh, by the way, I assume everyone who's going to watch the show has watched it by now, so I'm not going to bother with spoilers. Hope everybody's ok with that.

Yeah. I think we can assume anyone who is interested in seeing this unspoiled has seen it already. I'm going to go with the same assumption.

But I am going to put a gap here until we get confirmation from all the regulars as to whether or not they want spoilers marked.


















First and foremost, my biggest question about the finale is WHY THE FUCK DID CHARLIE KILL HIMSELF?? Things clearly turned out differently than Desmond predicted. What need was served in his drowning? The most important part of his drowning in Desmond's vision was that he flipped a switch but a) it was more complicated than a switch and b) he had already turned the system off. Is Desmond just a really big dick who wanted to trick Charlie into killing himself? What the hell? Obviously there's something more going on here than we know since we didn't get to see even the tiniest slice of Desmond's vision as we usually do.

Anyway, I really dug Charlie and I'm pissed to see him go. This is clearly a step backward for Hobbits!

Man, I hate it that we get all these new questions, and now we don't even know where the show is going! What was the significance that the ship wasn't Desmond's girlfriend's? Why didn't the island want any of them to leave? Did any of them stay behind? (I imagine Locke did) What the fuck's up with that Jacob feller? Why'd Walt have such a weird voice? The questions just go on forever!!

And, with the limited time left between Jack speaking over the satellite phone to what are, presumeably, their rescuers, there ain't much time to solve many of the mysteries and questions of the island. The only way to resolve most of those is to go back and actively have stuff happen which, it seems, Jack is ready and willing to do.

I think you all may be jumping ahead a little here. I will give the caveat that I have not yet watched the producers special that aired prior to the finale, so if any answers were given in that, then I'll find out later.

1. We didn't "really" see Charlie die. We assumed he died when he backed away from the door. I think the producers may have more in store for him (unless something has been posted on another board that I have not read). I am half expecting him to swim to the surface in the season 4 opener.

2. We assume that Jack was talking to rescuers on the satellite phone. Ben may not be lying in this situation and they may be "bad" people. Perhaps they are looking for survivors of the Dharma Initiative and are, therefore, bad to Ben and his group, but not to the survivors. But, they may assume that the survivors are part of Ben's group.

I think it'd be really cool (and I might even start watching it) if the last two seasosn take place in the future, or whatever was shown at the end of the Finale, and all the flashbacks are from the island, showing how they escaped.

If I get some time today, I'm going to answer some of the questions a few of you are wondering about, and provide some additional tidbits from the finale that you may have missed.

One thing I will confirm right here and now is that Charlie IS dead. Dom gave an interview not too long ago where he said he was growing a bit disillusioned with the direction his character was going (after the end of Season 2 and beginning of Season 3), and began throwing around ideas with the writers on how Charlie might "leave" the island. His main concern was turning Charlie into a hero by the end of the story arc, which they succeeded in doing.

Damn...I was trying to live in the fantasy that Charlie might live. I really liked his character.

I didn't understand Charlie dying either. As soon as the pressure equalized, he should have been able to swim out the window. Or, why not close the door, from the OUTSIDE?!?!

Also, I think with this episode they are changing the paradigm, (sp?). From now on the show will be in the future, when the are off the island, and all flashbacks will be to what happened after they made the call to the "rescue ship".

Interesting stuff though. Definitely looking forward to the return in January 2008.

Charlie's definitely gone. If they bring him back at this point I think most people would be pretty upset. The build up to his death for an entire half season had to pay off in his actual death. If that's negated...wow, we wasted even more time on a storyline that didn't come to fruition.

I think the situation he was in required him to close the door while the water was rushing in. Couldn't lock the door from the other side. It looks like he could have swam out the porthole, but I think at that point he didn't want to jeopardize Claire and the baaaaaybeeeeee getting off the island. He wanted to stay as close to Desmond's vision as possible to allow for its endpoint to come to fruition. If he survived, he may have changed things and Claire doesn't get rescued.

I think he closed the hatch to prevent the bay from flooding, in an attempt to save Desmond.

If Des wanted Charlie gone he'd let him get toasted by the lightning the first time around, smash his neck in the rocks, drown or have an arrow up his throat ... He wasn't out of opportunities, that's for sure.

The positive pressure on the door would have at least bought them enough time to dive into the opening and swim out. The opening was, after all, near the opposite side they got under initially. They were literally about a 20 foot swim from hitting open water and ascent.

Any idea who's funeral Jack went to in the flash forward (where nobody else showed)? I thought maybe Juliette's.

I also noticed that Kate didn't say Sawyer's name, but just said "he'll be wondering" or waiting, or something like that. I wonder if that was on purpose and they'll make it a twist, as everyone would assume she was referring to Sawyer.

With no friends or family showing up and Jack claiming to be neither but apparently needing to go, I figured it was Ben. Then again, I didn't catch the details on the clipping until they were posted here.

My first assumption was that it was Sawyer's, but then the whole comment from Kate threw me off. I suppose that was intentional by the producers, and was, well, quite ingenious.

It was a pretty decent episode. I think we nailed it when we said that the flashbacks were all going to be in the form of what happened after the call to the ship.

The most interesting thing to me was the reference to the "Oceanic 6", and the talk that Hurley needed to help, "them". Seems to imply that only 6 people leave the island and the rest are still stuck there. We have confirmation that Hurley, Kate, and Jack are off. There's indication that Sawyer is off too, so that's 4. I wonder who the other 2 are? Was one of them the person, (possibly Ben), that Jack went to the funeral of in last year's season finale?

You know, I'm not sure if Kate would be counted among the "Oceanic 6," and this is currently a point of debate within the Lost fan community. She was a fugitive from justice and I don't think she'd be able to walk around freely the way Jack and Hurley are, nor do I think Oceanic Air would be happy with a felon being treated as a celebrity. So I think she isn't counted as one of the "Oceanic 6," even though she obviously got off the island.

Fucking Hurley episode.

Just watched the Desmond-centric ep. I enjoyed it a lot. Surprisingly, the flashbacks were actually used effectively and were part of the storyline. Of course I guess they weren't actually flashbacks, but then the ep was still able to keep the flashback structure intact. Pretty neat. (Not that I'm condoning future flashbacks/forwards by any means. )
