I have been amazed by Dan Simmons for years now.

Why hasn't the popular culture discovered and ruined Dan's work with movies, trading cards, figurines, message boards, infomercials, NASCAR endorsements, and the red carpet treatment?

I thank God that they haven't discovered and ruined his work. The man is a grand master of SF, one of the modern greats. And he can write in every genre with equal aplomb.

I would love to see some sort of visual representation of the Hyperion and Endymion books... but, I want to see ALL of it. It would have to be a TV series... and it would have to last for a long time to cover everything to my satisfaction.

HYPERION: The Movie Rumors and Reality

"Dan recently gave this response to some of those queries – 'Yes, Virginia, there is a Hyperion movie in the works. It has been optioned by a top-notch studio, is slated to be directed by a top-name director, and already has the involvement of a top-flight movie star. Screenwriters have been attached to the project and a first draft screenplay is expected soon.'"

If I remember correctly, it was the prose that made me stop. The quality of writing really irritated me, though everyone tells me that the story and ideas are worth the read.

So, when I say I'll try again, that's what I mean. Maybe I was in the wrong mood for the voice. I don't know. Some books are like that. I don't think I could ever have read through the Da Vinci Code, for example, because I thought the prose was so workmanlike, with those adverbs flapping cumbersomely (hee!). But the film was a fun way to digest the story.

I need to pick up The Terror. Is it out in paperback yet?

Would love to see the Hyperion Cantos and the Ilium/Olympus duology translated onto screen, though both would be entirely too costly to do correctly. The rumors and Dan's posting about the "famous director" attached to the project are a few years old...maybe this will be one of those things where it finally comes together and we're surprised by an announcement, but I suspect Hyperion will languish in Development Hell forever.
