Last weekend, Indiana Jones became the second movie of the summer to gross in excess of 300 million.

I don't think I saw a single news story about it. Once the line's been crossed for the first time during the summer, the papers seem to lose all interest unless another movie's performance suggests it might make it to 400 million. I doubt we have any 400 performers for the summer.

Looks like Hancock wasn't as strong an opener as they were hoping it would be. It still has Friday and Saturday to meet expectations, but analysts are worried it won't, since 4 July falls on a Friday, and people typically spend that day shooting fireworks and getting drunk.

Wow. Love Guru couldn't even stay in the top ten for its third weekend out. It barely beat Iron Man.

Better dust off that supporting actor jacket you wore for a while back in the nineties, Mr. Myers.

I can't help but think the Verne Troyer sex tape scandal was a horribly failed publicity stunt for Love Guru.

It's too early for the usual suspects (Prophets, Guru, Report) to put up predictions (all that last minute buzz tracking and advance ticket sale counting), but Mojo has opened up its Derby. The average guesses of the users--so far--is that it will make in excess of 130 million from Friday to Sunday, which would easily eclipse the Friday-to-Sunday grosses of Iron Man and Indiana Jones, which both came in around 100 million (after you take away Iron Man's eight and ten o'clock Thursday showings, and after you take away Indiana Jones's Thursday and Memorial Monday showings).

This figure will likely adjust itself considerably once the big shots start throwing their forecasts into the ring. Chances are predictions will be a little lower, but I'm guessing they won't be all that much lower.

Anticipation for the movie is through the roof, and audiences are hungry for one last huge summer event.

Last summer had its three 300 million-plus earners, and the money men want at least as many for this summer. It probably won't be happening for Wall-E or Hancock. It almost certainly won't be happening for Kung Fu Panda.

And X-Files? It just won't be happening for the X-Files. It had its chance to appeal to a broader audience back when the show was still on the air and non-fans were curious. The X-Files brand is now officially "niche."

There's probably no reason to speculate on the weekend take for this weekend's other major release for you folks--especially considering it's a rom-com musical starring Meryl Streep and featuring an all ABBA soundtrack.

In other news, Indiana Jones may just catch and pass Iron Man in the next couple of weeks. A lot of it will depend on how many screens it loses to The Dark Knight this weekend.

I'm not even going to pretend anyone here gives a damn about how anything else but The Dark Knight (love that title!) will be doing this weekend.

We're seeing history here folks.

According to early estimates (estimates being estimated, and thus not official [though I suppose one could have an "official estimate"]), The Dark Knight should end up with with somewhere around $314,245,000 in domestic box office by the end of Sunday. This puts it ahead of Indiana Jones ($313,626,000) and just a shade behind Iron Man ($314,905,000).

It will be 2008's reigning box office champ by Monday. If estimates turn out to be low, it could be in 2008's top spot by the end of today.

My wallet helped out both Step Brothers and the new X-Files movie, but to little avail. The former only pulled in 30-ish million; the latter pulled in just a little over 10. Estimated.

Box Office Guru's Gitesh Pandya is of the belief that The Dark Knight may hit 400 million by Tuesday.

That's a lot.

The Dark Knight earned an estimated 43.8 million, which is very close to the amount most sites were predicting it would make. The only real surprise this weekend is that the Mummy sequel underperformed. Its underperformance landed it in second place, which allowed The Dark Knight that very rare (in these times) third weekend atop the box office.

The Dark Knight didn't manage to equal or surpass Spider-Man's third weekend numbers, but very few people were expecting it to do so. It will probably be crossing the 400 million mark on either Monday or Tuesday.

The Dark Knight's box office future is fairly well mapped out onward from this point. When analysts say to expect it to make it to the low 500 million-range and stop there, they are to be believed.

That's what I'be been guessing.

Also, I'm not surprised on The Mummy 3. I could not figure for the life of me why anyone thought it would make a lot.

TDK earned an estimated $6.3 million yesterday, its 18th day of release, to pass the $400 million mark an astounding 25 days faster than the previous record-holder. After today, it will become the highest-grossing superhero/comics film in history, passing Spider-Man as it continues its inexorable climb to #2 all-time.

It has a shot, certainly, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up, because I'd definitely LOVE to see it knock that film off its perch. That way, I can be even more pleasantly surprised if it does.

There's no way it catches Titanic, but sure as shite the closer it gets to Titanic the more you will see a Titanic-esque backlash to it.
